Wood

Mr. Charles Ferrell Wood, 81, passed away Friday, January 31, 2025, at Memorial Satilla Health in Waycross following an extended illness.

Wood was born in Dermont, Ky., to the late Charles William Wood and Bessie Mae Wood. He served in the United States Navy and retired after nearly 25 years of service. Wood was not one to meet a stranger, and his kind nature meant he knew someone wherever he went.

Quick to shake a hand, Wood had a warm and welcoming presence. He loved fishing as a life-long hobby, and also proved to be a jack-of-all-trades around the house as there wasn't much that he couldn’t do or couldn’t figure out. In addition to fishing, his second and third favorite past times were drinking a cup of coffee and laughing through a good conversation.

Wood was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Brenda Gail Wood, and two sisters, Jane McGehee and Pam Hollinsworth, both from his home-state of Kentucky.

He is survived by his current wife, Jimmie Carole Wood of Waycross; five children, Alicia Wood of Marietta, Ga., Pilar Neal (Todd) of Rockmart, Ga., Michelle Nixon (Greg) of Kennesaw, Ga., Katie Nelms (Greg) of Uvalda, Ga., and Karen Boney (Mike) of Claxton, Ga.; 12 grandchildren, Maggie, Nichole, Matthew, Devin, Shelby, Andrew, Cooper, Avery, Sadie, Josey, Will, and Micahlan; many great grandchildren; two sisters, Wilda Dever (W.O.) of Livermore, Ky., and Gayle Gillim (Dale) of Alvaton, Ky.

In honor of Wood’s heart for strays of all kinds, his family asks for donations to the local animal shelter, in lieu of flowers.

A memorial service will be held at noon Tuesday, February 18 at the Music Funeral Home Chapel. The family will begin receiving friends at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Sympathy may be expressed by signing the online registry at www.musicfuneralhome.c om.

Music Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
