PCHS BEAR FACTS

This week’s PCHS Bear Facts is a listing of hot topics for the week spanning May 17-23.

PCHS is home to yet another state champion!  Congratulations to Sophie Scruggs, who won the state title in girls’ pole vault this past Friday, setting a personal record of 11 feet, 7 inches! In doing so, Sophie became the first girl in PCHS history to win a state title in pole vault. We congratulate her on this most excellent accomplishment.

Congrats also to Kora Good, who placed sixth in the girls’ high jump at the state meet. For the boys, Reed Young was eighth in state in pole vault while Campbell Strickland established a personal record in pole vault.

Our varsity Lady Bears tennis team ended their season with an epic 4-hour match against Berrien May 5. This was just the second time in history that PCHS girls made it to the state final four. We salute Coach Kathy Bradley and the Lady Bears on this achievement. It was the final match at PCHS for graduating seniors Taylor Sikes, Natalie Sullivan and Mary Kathryn Cox.

This past week was Teacher Appreciation Week, and while we celebrated it a week early at PCHS due to testing, it’s a sentiment that’s worth repeating. Thank you to all our teachers for making PCHS a true bastion of excellence! Here’s to hoping everyone gets a chance to relax during summer. You have earned it!

National Nurses Week was also this past week and at PCHS we have two of the finest. Mrs. Paige King takes care of students and staff on a daily basis, tending to bumps, bruises and much more. Mrs. Ellen Knowlton is a certified nurse who teaches the CNA course, training the future nurse workforce. We thank both of these ladies for their unparalleled excellence!

We salute  the following students for passing their End of Pathway Assessment in Computer Programming for the Computer Science Pathway. Richard Nunn, Ethan Gay, Kenan Grant, Nicolas Whitley, Mikal Chancey, Joshua Newman, Zacharey Morgan and Angel Vargas Hernandez. The instructor is Mr. Clint Hodges.

Kudos  to the following students for passing the end of pathway assessment in Television Production for the AV/Film Pathway: Lilly Moore, Regan Boatright, Kayla Johnson, Breana James, Cayetano Santana-Franco, Joshua Newman, Drew Guy, Maddie White, and Riley Clements. The instructor is Mr. John DuPont.

“Senior Dress Up Week” continues: Today (Wednesday) is College Shirts Day, Thursday is Dress Professional Day. Friday features Color Wars, with all classes encouraged to participate as follows: 9th grade - white, 10th grade-blue, 11th grade-gray, and 12th grade-black.

Softball tryouts continue today and tomorrow (Wednesday and Thursday) after school. Volleyball tryouts wind down today after school in the new gym.

********

Ninth grade spring football practice continues today and wraps tomorrow.

********

Coming up May 22-23, it’s the boys and girls state golf tournaments at Okefenokee Country Club here in Pierce County. Both the PCHS boys and girls will compete.

If you didn’t order a yearbook but would now like one, there are a limited number still available for purchase while supplies last. Y0u can buy them before school in Mrs. Malayna’s classroom (123) before school or in the lunchroom during lunch. Cost is $75.

Current sophomores and juniors interested in Work Based Learning need to fill out the Google form sent to you in your school email ASAP. The dress code remains in effect. Remember: hats are not to be worn inside the building. Also, shorts are not permitted to be rolled or worn in any other manner that causes them to be shorter than the specified length. Thanks for keeping it classy as we near the end of the year!

June 12-14 are the three days for upcoming seniors to make appointments for their senior pictures with the school’s senior pictures photographer, SWI. July 29th is make-up day.

College of Coastal Georgia and Southeast Georgia Health System will be hosting the 2nd edition of Nurse Camp, July 11-14. Instruction is 9-4 daily, and there are two pricing options, including an overnight option for those students who want to stay on campus. Apply only by May 15 at sghs.org/nursecamp.

Seniors: Remember to pay your class dues, fines, lunch bills, and any outstanding fees or fines ASAP. Senior class dues are $20, but if you haven’t paid from previous year, you must also pay those before graduation. Underclassmen fees are: juniors ($25), sophomores ($10), and freshmen ($5).

Parents, please update your student’s address in Infinite Campus by May 31.

********
