This week’s PCHS Bear Facts is a listing of hot topics for the week spanning May 24-30.
The end of the school year is finally here, and it’s another bittersweet one, as we say goodbye to friends and faculty we’ve known throughout our high school years!
Honors Day at PCHS is this morning (Wednesday) at 8:30 a.m.in the gym. Senior Honors Night is tomorrow evening (Thursday) at 6:30 p.m. in the gym. Underclassmen final exams are Thursday and Friday, with Friday being an early release day. Graduation is set for Friday evening at 8 p.m. in Bear Stadium. All ceremonies will be broadcast live on the NFHS Network.
We salute senior Jaquez White, who won the state title in the boys’ 300 hurdles at the state track meet on May 13. Jacquez blistered the course, breaking his own school record with a time of 37.91 seconds, which wound up being a top-50 national time. He is the first boys hurdles state champion in PCHS History. Jaquez also leaves as the only athlete in PCHS history to win state championships in three different sports: football (2020), weightlifting (2023), and track (2023).

Other PCHS competitors from the state track meet included the 4 X 100 boys relay team of Joe Drew, Jimarion Guyton, Dexter Hartzog, and JaQuez White. That relay team finished 4th in state. The girls’ 4 x 100 relay team finished 10th. Those relay members included Jada Patterson, Sophie Scruggs, Mollie Williamson, and Kora Good.Meanwhile, Jada Patterson placed 10th in the girls’ 100 meters.

Kudos to PCHS tennis players who were honored at their annual banquet this week. Girls’ winners included Maura Kate Waters - Most Improved and Academic Award; Grace Christopher- Tennis Ace; and Jasmine Sergent - Coaches Award.

Boys’ winners included Jeb Bradley- Coaches Award; JC Nimmer- Tennis Ace; Davis Hersey- Academic Award; and Nate Gyesky- Most Improved. Davis Hersey, Mary Kathryn Cox, Natalie Sullivan, Taylor Sikes, and Bennett Higginson were all recognized for their roles as seniors while the The Pierce County Tennis Booster Club awarded scholarships to Davis Hersey, Mary Kathryn Cox, and Bennett Higginson.

Elsewhere, our mathlete team had a good day at Coastal Pines Technical College on Friday, May 12. Cadee Raulerson finished 2nd overall while Maddie White and Emma Knowlton finished 3rd overall individually. Pierce County team two also claimed 2nd overall at the event.

Congratulations to Jarrett Harris and Dakota Kratochvil, PCHS graduates who also graduated recently from Project Search. Dakota and Jarrett were recognized recently for their successful completion of internships through Memorial Satilla Health in Waycross.

We salute Mason Woodcock for being named a 2023 All-American by the National High School Strength Coaches Association. Mason, who was part of the 2023 PCHS State Championship weightlifting squad, was the Georgia Pound-for-Pound Champion this year and among 50 to be named All-American. Kudos also to Sophie Scruggs for being named 912 Sports Magazine Athlete of the Month for May. Sophie recently won the state title in girls pole vault for class AA at the state track meet.

Summer School is set for June 5-8 and June 12-15. Session 1 is 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. daily, with session 2 taking place from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Breakfast and lunch are provided. Only certain courses will be offered. Up to two (2) credits can be recovered in summer school and you must have had at least a 60 average in the class you are recovering. Parents will receive a call to confirm student attendance after final grades are submitted during the week of May 29.

If you didn’t order a yearbook but would now like one, there are a limited number still available for purchase while supplies last. You can buy them before school in Mrs. Malayna’s classroom (123) before school or in the lunchroom during lunch. Cost is $75.

June 12-14 are the three days for upcoming seniors to make appointments for their senior pictures with the school’s senior pictures photographer, SWI. July 29th is make-up day.

Join the PCHS Spirit Cheerleaders and learn cheers, chants, dances, and jumps at the annual cheer camp June 15 & 16 (9 a.m. to noon daily) in the PCHS gym. This is for cheer campers who have completed grades Pre-K through fifth grade. Cost of the camp is $30 and includes a t-shirt. Registration deadline is June 5. College of Coastal Georgia and Southeast Georgia Health System will be hosting the 2nd edition of Nurse Camp, July 11-14. Instruction is 9-4 daily, and there are two pricing options, including an overnight option for those students who want to stay on campus. Apply only by May 15 at sghs.org/nursecamp.
