This week PCHS celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week! The rest of the world will do so next week but since we’re testing next week, we will do so now. That just goes to show you how our dedicated faculty works so hard each day. Thank you to each of our teachers for demonstrating excellence as the standard each and every day!
Meanwhile, we also observed Administrative Professionals Week on April 26 and recognized those dedicated ladies who form the backbone of PCHS: Mrs. Jammie Boatright, Mrs. Pam Harrell, Mrs. Madison Hodges, and Mrs. Amber Cyr. This Friday, May 5 is National Lunch Lady Hero Day! We recognize those special ladies in the Bear Cafe who work so hard to keep everyone fully nourished: Retta Rowe, April Hodgman, Ann Roberson, Amanda Sweet, Abby Burkett, Jane Barrett, and Dana Daniels. Thank you, ladies!
PCHS also celebrates its two most recent finalists for national awards this week: senior Maddie White and Mrs. Carmen Hood for being named finalists in Varsity Brands School Spirit Awards for Most Spirited Teacher and Most Spirited Student! Maddie is among seven national finalists for the student award. This is the second straight year in which PCHS has had a finalist in the student category. Mrs. Hood is among 10 finalists in the teacher category. She is the first teacher from PCHS to become a national finalist. Maddie and Mrs. Hood are each eligible for a $3,000 cash prize. The winners will be announced on June 8. Congratulations again to both.

We salute PCHS FFA members Addie Brown and Elizabeth Griner, who displayed their vocal talents at this past week’s State FFA Convention. The girls opened the convention by singing the National Anthem and later entertained conventioneers with the song “There Was Jesus.”

It has been a busy past few weeks at PCHS and we’d like to thank Mrs. Elizabeth Slusher and everyone who made prom a success. We salute our prom royalty: Kenzie Meeks (queen), Patrick McDonald (king), Ellie Kay Bennett (princess), and Elijah Howard (prince).

Stetson Bennett is now a Los Angeles Ram! Congratulations to the PCHS alum, who was selected by the Rams in the 4th round of the 2023 NFL Draft (128th pick overall). Stetson is the first Pierce County Bear ever selected in the NFL Draft.

EOP testing begins tomorrow. The schedule is as follows: American Lit (May 4-5), Biology (May 9), Algebra (May 10), and U.S. History (May 11).

Congratulations to the following students on receiving their Microsoft Office Specialist Certification in PowerPoint 2019: Charley Dieringer, Kaden Roell, Mill Ransey, Lorelai Thompson, Ram Patel, Rodrigo Alcaraz, Macie Dryden, and Beyonce Sanchez. Rodrigo Alcaraz also received his Microsoft Specialist Associate certification for being certified in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2019.

Hats off to the varsity boys’ soccer team, which finished the season with a berth in the Final Four. The Bears finished 15-6 on the season. Congrats to Coach John Hilton, Coach Tommy Doss, and the guys.

PCHS boy’s tennis also had a terrific season, which ended in the Elite 8. Congrats to Coach Lori Marx and the boys.

Varsity spring football practice continues today and all of next week (May 8-12). Ninth grade practice will be May 15-18.

Volleyball tryouts are May 15 and 16 from 4 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. and again May 17 from 3:45 until 5:45 in the new gym. This is for all players currently in grades 8-11.

Any senior who wishes to be part of the vocal ensemble that will perform at graduation, please see Mrs. Justice by this Friday, May 5.

The PBIS Spring Fling is Friday, May 12. This is a reward for those who achieved specific requirements set forth. So pay any fines or fees you owe, make sure you are passing everything, and ensure you meet the other criteria listed here. The cutoff for meeting the criteria for tardies, absences, and ISS is May 8.

The 2023-2024 Student Council and Class Officer Elections will be held on Thursday, May 11.

PCHS Chorus and Theatre Departments will present “The Wizard of Oz” May 11, 12, and 13 at 7 pm in the auditorium. Admission will be $10 at the door.

June 12-14 are the three days for upcoming seniors to make appointments for their senior pictures with the school’s senior pictures photographer, SWI. July 29th is make-up day.

College of Coastal Georgia and Southeast Georgia Health System will be hosting the 2nd edition of Nurse Camp, July 11-14. Instruction is 9-4 daily, and there are two pricing options, including an overnight option for those students who want to stay on campus. Apply only by May 15 at sghs.org/nursecamp.

Seniors: Remember to pay your class dues, fines, lunch bills, and any outstanding fees or fines ASAP. Senior class dues are $20, but if you haven’t paid from previous year, you must also pay those before graduation. Underclassmen fees are: juniors ($25), sophomores ($10), and freshmen ($5).
