Dr. Katherine Lois Hendry, EdD, 79, of New York City, NY, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at St. Luke’s Hospital, after a sudden heart attack.
Dr. Hendry was born August 21, 1943, in Waycross, to the late Earl Dudley Hendry, DDS and Christine Callaway Hendry. She was a 1961 graduate of Waycross High School and has been a loyal classmate returning to their many reunions through the years.
She studied applied music-voice and earned her under-graduate degree from Florida State University remaining an ardent football fan of the Seminoles. You most likely would find her on Fall Saturdays joining a group of younger FSU fans in NYC to root their guys on. The regulars named her “Mama Nole”.
She moved to New York City in the late 1960s to study music education/voice at Teachers College, Columbia University, earning a doctorate in education while being employed full-time in the career development office at Barnard College. Dr. Hendry taught private voice lessons and was also a professional singer with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. Her natural gift and love of music allowed her to both enjoy and participate in many of the other opportunities in the arts available in the city she loved so dearly.
Survivors include her son Dr. Hunter Hendry Piermont, DDS (Alison) and sons, Jackson Piermont and Charlie Piermont, Holly Springs, NC; two sisters Emily Hendry Aguirre, Blackshear and Rosalind Hendry Eskew (Bob), Waycross; brother, Earl Dudley Hendry Jr. (Brenda), Blackshear and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins who were all dear to her.
