Lillian Harrie Moye Tanner, 94, died Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at her residence on St. Simons Island.
She was born in Waycross to the late James Harry Moye and Mary Sykes Moye. She taught for 20 years in the Ware County School System at the Wacona, Pine Crest, Dixie Union and Emerson Park schools. She later retired from the Brantley County School System as the curriculum director.
She was a member of Central Baptist Church for over 60 years and taught the adult women’s Sunday school class for more than 50 years. The last class she taught was the Mary-Martha Sunday School Class and she was also a member of the Merry Makers Group. She also worked with the committee to write the history of Central Baptist Church and helped edit the final edition. She was also a member of the Retired Educators Association of Ware County and a former member of the Waycross Exchange Club Auxiliary.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Eustace Bernell “Dick” Tanner; two sons, James Norris Tanner and Gregory Neil Tanner; a daughter, Marilynn Eugenia Mobley and her mother-in-law, Eugenia Estelle Lee.
Survivors include two daughters, Marikaye Hyers of Brunswick and Janice Renee Sweat (Alfred), Alma; eight grandchildren, Salina Robbins (Jon), Rebecca Newton (Nathan), Katy Mobley, Evan Hyers (Alisha), Sydney Phalen (Jon), Rachel Dowling (Todd), Chance Tanner and Faith Tanner; nine great-grandchildren, Hayden Norris (Anna), Tanner Norris, April Robbins, Logan Robbins, Lyra Newton, Parker Hyers, Blakely Dowling, Kennedy Phalen and soon to be born Byron Dowling; two sisters, Mary Ann Moye Strickland (Ronnie), Waycross and Betty Jean Moye Myers (late Gene), LaFayette, LA and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, from the Central Baptist Church.
A private family burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
