This week’s PCHS Bear Facts is a listing of hot topics for the week spanning March 1-8.
We begin with a salute to our PCHS Mathletes, who copped top honors at the region math competition February 24 at South Georgia State College! PCHS “Team A” won 1st place overall. That team included Cadee Raulerson, Caroline Wheeler, Addy Cantrell and Chase LeFevre. Addy was also the 4th place individual overall and the top scorer for PCHS. Cadee finished as the 5th place individual overall. PCHS “Team D” finished in 3rd place. That team included: Becky Thigpen, Brooke Williams, Maddie White and Cianna Kicklighter. PCHS “Team E” finished in 5th place. That team included: Emily Stovall, Camille Hendry, Maura Kate Waters and Elizabeth Griner. Math team coaches are Becky King, Diane Griffis and Pamela Baker.

Congratulations to our FFA nursery landscape team who finished as runner-up in the recent region competition in Berrien County. Team members include Rahli Turner, Cianna Kicklighter, Maddie White, and Paige Follette. The team now moves on to the state competition March 17 and 18 in Covington.

Coastal Pines Technical College is fielding interest for the Mobile Electronics Technician Technical Certificate of Credit, which would be offered on campus at PCHS for the 2023-24 school year if there is enough interest. This field of study provides students with short-term training to prepare them for entry-level employment in the field of car audio systems installation. Topics include direct and alternating current principles, soldering techniques and system installation procedures. Candidates for the 2023 Sound of Silver Auxiliary units, mark your calendars: Danceline and Majorette practice continues through Thursday, Mar. 2 from 3:45 -5:30 p.m. each day. Tryout day will be this Friday, March 3 in front of judges. Colorguard and flagline practice will be Friday, March 10 and again from Tuesday, March 14 through Thursday, March 16 from 3:45-5:30 p.m. each of those days. Tryout day will be Friday, March 17 in front of judges. You are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, but all attire must be in accordance with the dress code. Permitted attire includes: T-Shirts, shorts, leggings, tennis shoes and dance shoes. Not allowed are short shorts, midriff tops/no stomachs showing, low cut tops, sandals, slippers or shower shoes.

The PCHS Theatre Department will present 12 Angry Jurors at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 7 in the PCHS auditorium. Admission is $5 at the door. Then March 14, it’s a theater showcase that will include Charlotte’s Web and Hamilton Highlights. The curtain goes up at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. Admission for that event will also be $5 at the door.

PCHS Prom Committee is now selling Hog-n-Bones boston butt tickets for $30 each. This is an $8 savings from the normal counter price at the restaurant. Tickets are on sale through March 8 and you can redeem your tickets any time between now and May 13 at the Waycross Hog-n-Bones. See Mrs. Slusher or a Prom Committee member to purchase tickets.

Deadline for the Miss Pierce County High School Pageant registration is Friday, March 10. Girls interested in participating can pick up a registration form from Mrs. Beverly’s room (395) in the mornings before 8:15 or during 4th block. The pageant will be held on Saturday, March 25.

The 2023 Spring Klondike Career Day will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, March 10, at Georgia Power’s Savannah Operating Headquarters. This is a career exposure event for high school students. Activities include a live wire demonstration, bucket truck exhibitions, network underground, metering, transmission and climbing.

FFA is joining with 4H to host the 2023 Poultry Show in the Park at 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 20 in Blackshear City Park. Competition is open to ages 5-18. Events include a rooster crowing contest, fashion show, record book contest, and breed class contest. Entry fee is $30, but you can register up to 4 birds at just $10 per additional bird. Exhibitors and at least one parent must attend a parent meeting on March 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the Pierce County Extension office.

PCHS basketball is now officially in the books. The Lady Bears were eliminated from the state tournament February 21 in Thomson. Congratulations to Coach Lacie Evans and the Lady Bears on their state berth this season.

The following PCHS girls basketball players have earned all-region honors: Bella Delaney and Alayna Bell earned 1st Team accolades, while Reagan Larson was accorded 2nd Team honors. Claire Murray, Jenna Herrin and Olivia Bennett all received honorable mention. For the PCHS boys, Joe Drew and Jaquez White earned 2nd Team honors, with Colin Waters and Bennett Higginson receiving honorable mention.

PCHS picked up its third win of the season on the baseball diamond, a 9-3 decision over Fannin County February 25. The baseball Bears picked up their second win of the season Feb. 21, a 6-3 victory over Wayne County. Cole Royer pitched three strong innings of relief for the Bears. The next varsity baseball game is this Friday at home against Southeast Bulloch.

The PCHS weightlifting team finished 2nd in area competition as Mason Woodcock was the pound-for-pound heavy lifter.

Boys and girls tennis swept Toombs County on February 23. For the boys, Jeb Bradley (6-3, 6-3), J.C. Nimmer (6-0, 6-0) and Aeden Carlson (6-2, 6-3) were all winners in singles action. Davis Hersey and Peyton Thompson (6-0, 6-3) won in #1 doubles and at #2 doubles, Grayson Rodgers and Garrett Page won (6-0,6-0). For the Lady Bears, Grace Christopher (6-3,6-0), Rebecca Tyre (6-3,6-3), and Marli Walker (6-1, 6-0) all scored singles match victories. Taylor Sikes and Maura Kate Waters scored a win in #1 doubles (6-0, 6-1) and in #2 doubles, it was Mattie Lee and Jasmine Sergeant scoring the win. (6-0, 6-0).

The defending state champion Lady Bears golf team began their season with a victory over Camden County in a nine-hole match Thursday, February 24 at Osprey Cove Golf Club. The Lady Bears finished the round with a 115 and Camden finished with 135. Mackenzie Connell led the team with an even par score of 36, followed by Addyson Walker with a 38, and Lily Spivey and Belle Sinclair tied with a 41. Maggie Sapp and Chloe Lynn also contributed to the win. Boys’ golf finished 7th out of 21 teams in their match at Osprey Cove last Saturday as Ethan Arnold fired a low score of 71.
