Sheriff warns of recent scams in Pierce County

Sheriff Ramsey Bennett asks the public to be aware of scams that are circulating in the community.

One is related to law enforcement and the other is related to Medicare.

“The basic (law enforcement) scam is someone identifying themselves as the sheriff or one of his deputies calls and says there is a warrant out for your arrest. The caller tells you that you can cancel the warrant by getting a money card and sending it to them,” he said.

The sheriff said there is “not a bit of truth” to what the caller says.

“We would never call you on the phone to notify you of a warrant. We don’t issue or settle warrants by asking you to pay cash,” he said.

A Medicare scam targeting senior citizens is also active in the area.

In the Medicare scam, the caller seeks to obtain your Medicare or Social Security number.

“They might claim your Medicare card is going to expire or that you’re eligible for a special plan with lower premiums or they may tell you that you have been approved for certain services and medical supplies or equipment,” said the Sheriff.

Bennett asks citizens to remember Medicare will never call you directly unless you have called them with a request.

“If you get an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be from Medicare, it’s a scam,” he said.

For more information, or to report an instance of the scam, please call the sheriff’s office at 912-449-2011.
