Scragg steps down as interim county manager

Charles “Chuck” Scragg III has resigned as interim county manager.

Scragg notified commissioners two weeks ago that he would be terminating his contract effective March 10.

The board officially accepted Scragg’s resignation at their monthly meeting last Tuesday night. Bryan Singleton was hired as interim manager in the same motion. (See related story.)

Scragg’s original contract had called for his term to end March 30 or two weeks after a permanent manager was hired. The contract included a clause to allow either party to terminate the contract early. Scragg III told commissioners he has sold his house on St. Simons Island and will be relocating to Dallas, GA.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Pierce County,” he said.

Scragg specifically complimented Chairman Neal Bennett and commissioners for their kindness to him and for the professional way county operations are managed.

Scragg replaced Jason Rubenbauer, who resigned in November to take a job as president and chief executive officer of the Waycross-Ware County Development Authority.

Scragg had intended to stay on for a couple of weeks with the new county manager, but the search for a new manager appears to have stalled.

Commissioners named Joey Cason as their sole finalist last month, but contract negotiations broke down and the board rescinded Cason’s finalist designation.

No action has been taken on the county manager search since that time.
