Darcile Carter Roney, 79, of Blackshear, passed away Friday morning, March 17, 2023, at the Hospice Satilla Hospice House in Waycross. Her husband, Harry Richard Roney, 82, also of Blackshear, passed away Sunday morning, March 19, 2023, also at the Hospice Satilla Hospice House.
She was born in Blackshear March 22, 1943. She had lived in many cities over the years being a military wife with Columbia, SC being her home prior to moving back to Pierce County. Many will remember her as their salesperson at the former Friedman’s Jewelers in Waycross. She has spent the last several years being a homemaker. She loved working in her yard and enjoyed cooking and watching Judge Judy. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was a daughter of the late Carl Colquitt and Lucy Roberson Carter. Her husband, Harry Richard Roney, passed away Sunday morning, March 19. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Cheryl Patricia “Sherry” Barnes; her sister, Nancy Lee and her brother, Corbitt Carter.
He was born in Philadelphia, PA June 2, 1940. He had lived in many cities over the years due to his military career with Columbia, SC being his home prior to moving to Pierce County. He retired from the U.S. Army as a Sergeant Major. He would go on to retire as a deputy warden at Ware State Prison. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and reading his Bible and in his younger days had enjoyed running. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Waycross.
He was a son of the late Arthur Joseph and Lillian Cecelia Eimer Roney. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Darcile Carter Roney, who passed away Friday, March 17; his daughter, Cheryl Patricia “Sherry” Barnes; his sister, Cecillia Patricia Tolbert and his brother, Arthur H. J. Roney.
Survivors include their two grandsons, Bryant Barnes, Athens and Taylor and Julia Barnes, Washington, DC; Mrs. Roney’s sister-in-law, Opal Carter, Jacksonville, FL and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Joint funeral services for the Roneys will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 24, from the Pearson-Dial Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home chapel immediately following the service.
Interment will be in the Waters Cemetery.
