Coates, Welch, Murray are LifeChanger nominees

Three Blackshear Elementary educators have been nominated for the 2022-2023 National LifeChanger of the Year Award.

BES Kindergarten teacher Dana Welch, second grade teacher Jennifer Murray and school counselor Laura Coates have been nominated for the award.

Sponsored by the National Life Group Foundation, LifeChanger of the Year recognizes and rewards the very best K-12 educators and school district employees across the United States who are making a difference in the lives of students by exemplifying excellence, positive influence and leadership.

Welch, Murray and Coates were nominated by Katie Cravey, a parent of a student, who recognized their exceptional dedication to the students of Blackshear Elementary School.

Welch creates a warm and welcoming environment where students feel safe to be themselves and learn. Her commitment to her students and their families has earned her the nomination and her impact on their lives will be felt for years to come.

Cravey spoke highly of Welch’s impact on her child.

“Mrs. Welch is a fantastic teacher,” said Cravey. “She has helped my child succeed in kindergarten.”

Murray’s positive attitude and supportive approach have earned her the admiration and respect of her students and fellow teachers. Her commitment to creating a welcoming and engaging classroom environment has made a lasting impact on her students and is a testament to her exceptional teaching abilities.

“Mrs. Murray is our district-wide Teacher of the Year! She is what all teachers strive to be!” said Cravey.

Coates is a compassionate listener who goes above and beyond to support her students and help them through challenging times.

Cravey praised Coates for her positive attitude and her unwavering commitment to her students’ well being.

“She always has a smile on her face and a nice thing to say,” explains Cravey. Coates is a shining example of the incredible impact that dedicated school counselors have on the lives of their students.

Each school year, LifeChanger of the Year receives hundreds of nominations from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Eighteen individual LifeChanger of the Year awards will be given during the 2022-2023 school year.

The Grand Prize Winner will receive $10,000 to be shared with their school/district. Four Grand Prize Finalists will receive $5,000 to be shared with their school/district. Ten LifeChanger Award Winners will receive $3,000 to be shared with their school/district. One Spirit Award Winner is given to the nominee whose community demonstrates the most support for their nomination. The winner will receive $5,000 to be shared with their school/district. One Capstone Award Winner is given to a nominee retiring at the end of the 2022-23 school year. The winner will receive $3,000 to be shared with their school or district.One Spotlight Award Winner is given to a nominee in a specific discipline each year. The winner will receive $5,000 to be shared with their school or district.

Winners are chosen by a selection committee comprised of former winners and education professionals, and will be announced soon.

Nominees must be K-12 teachers or school district employees. To be considered for an award, nominees must:

• Make a positive impact in the lives of students

• Enhance their school or district’s atmosphere, culture and pride

• Demonstrate exemplary leadership at the school and/or district level

• Possess a proven record of professional excellence

• Show commitment to building a nurturing environment that supports learning; and

• Adhere to the highest moral and ethical standards
