Five PCHS teams reach 2nd round of state tournament

Five Pierce County High School’s Spring sports teams have advanced into the second round of the GHSA Class AA state tournament.

The defending state champion Lady Bears’ golf team punched their ticket to the May 19-20 state finals after winning the Area 2 tournament.

The Bears were looking to do the same as they hosted the Area 2 tournament Monday, April 28 at Lakeview Golf Club. The top three teams will earn berths.

PCHS has 11 individuals and seven relay teams participating Saturday, May 3 in the Sectional meet at East Jackson High School.

The baseball Bears are hosting region foe Cook in the second round beginning with Thursday’s (May 1) doubleheader with Game 1 slated for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch. Game 2 will start approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the opener.

No game time has been released for a Friday, May 2 “if” game.

Soccer

The 11th-seed Lady Bears’ soccer team blanked 22nd-seed Westside- Macon 7-0 in the opening round of the state tournament Thursday, April 24. They will travel Thursday, May 1 to sixthseed Thomson, a 6-0 victor over 27th-seed Butler.

No report was filed on the Lady Bears’ victory.

Third-seed Region 3 member Savannah Arts Academy blanked 30thseed Hardaway 10-0 and will host 19th-seed Therrell in the second round.

Both Appling County, seeded 32nd, and Tattnall County, seeded 29th, lost. The Lady Pirates fell 10-0 to top-seed Pike County while the Lady Warriors lost a 1-0 decision to fourth-seed Drew Charter.

In the boys’ bracket, all five Region 3 members invited to the dance were placed on the right side of the 32-team bracket.

PCHS, seeded 15th, beat visiting 18th-seed Union County 7-1 Friday, April 25. The Bears travel Thursday, May 1 to region champion Tattnall County, the No. 2 seed. The Warriors blanked 31st-seed Therrell 10-0.

No report was filed on the Bears’ win.

Seventh-seed Crisp County knocked off 26thseed Redan 7-1. The Cougars will host the winner of 10th-seed Callaway and 23rd-seed Hart County.

Appling County, the 14th-seed, turned back regionmate Savannah Arts Academy, the No. 19 seed, 3-1. The Pirates travel to third-seed Drew Charter.

Tennis

The seventh-seed Lady Bears joined top-seed Appling County and 17thseed Savannah Arts Academy in advancing from Region 3 with Cook and Tattnall County bowing out.

PCHS blanked visiting 26th-seed Cook 3-0. The Lady Bears hosted 10thseed Columbia, who ousted Tattnall County 10, Monday afternoon, April 28.

No information was provided on the Lady Bears’ decision.

The Lady Pirates blanked 32nd-seed Carver-Columbus 3-0. They are hosting Savannah Arts, a 4-0 winner over 16th-seed Pike County.

The No. 2 seed Bears were one of three region members to advance along with seventh-seed Appling County and 15thseed Savannah Arts Academy.

Tattnall County, seeded 19th, and Cook, the No. 25 seed, both lost.

PCHS blanked 31stseed Washington 5-0 setting up a Monday, April 28 match with Savannah Arts Academy, a 5-0 winner over 18th-seed Davidson Fine Arts.

No information was provided on the Bears’ victory.

The Pirates posted a 30 win against 26th-seed Jackson and is hosting 10th-seed Thomson.

Tattnall County fell 3-0 to 14th-seed Sonoraville while Cook lost 4-1 at eighth-seed Sumter County.
