Mary Murray Thornton, 95, of K’ville, passed away early Wednesday morning, August 9, 2023, at the Appling Nursing and Rehabilitation Pavilion in Baxley, following an extended illness.
Born December 12, 1927, in Surrency, she was a daughter of the late James Floyd and Hortie Thomas Murray. She lived most of her life in K’ville and had owned and operated Mary’s Beauty Shop. She was a member of Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church and had served as a deaconess and served as the cemetery director for 23 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Morris Thornton; sister, Lula Murray Griffis and brothers, James Murray, Russell Murray, Leamon Murray, Joe Murray, Vernon Murray and Johnny Murray.
Survivors include her two sons, Jerry M. Thornton (wife Kathleen) and James “Jimmy” Thornton (wife Cheryl), all of K’ville; seven grandchildren: Heidi Thomas (husband Tim), Milledgeville, Charissa Fitch (husband Brannon), St. Simons Island, Amber Watts (husband Josh), Baxley, Becky Johnson (husband Chris), Reidsville, Jamie Thornton, Brunswick, Aaron Thornton (wife Bethany), Guyton, Miranda James (husband Jerry), Baxley and Eric Mizel (wife Jessica), Alma; 17 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law: Eva Mae Murray, Baxley and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation will be held from 2-3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, from the chapel of Hart Funeral Home.
Interment will follow in the Big Creek Cemetery in Wayne County.
