Two-vehicle, hit-and-run accident leads to foot chase, arrest with K-9 assistance
A Waycross man is in the Ware County Jail after being arrested on a variety of drug, firearm, theft and traffic violation charges following his involvement in a hit-and-run accident earlier this month.
Quamay Markice Sermon, 33, of 1200 block of Alice Street, was apprehended on foot by authorities after he fled the scene of the April 12 accident on Augusta Avenue near Ga. 520, Ware County Sheriff’s Office Major Neil Skerratt said.
Sermon was charged with felony possession of methamphetamine, felony possession of cocaine, felony possession of a firearm or knife in the commission of a crime, felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon or first-time offender and felony possession of receiving stolen property. The misdemeanor traffic violations included DUI, driving without a license on person, no insurance, failure to yield turning left and hitand- run.
Sermon appeared before a magistrate on the charges, but was denied bond, Skerratt said.
Patrol Deputy Zackary Lytle responded at 9:48 a.m.to a call for a two-vehicle accident on Augusta Avenue. While en route, it was learned a male involved in the wreck had fled the scene.
Lytle interviewed witnesses at the scene who said a male in a silver Chevrolet Malibu was driving erratically east on Ga. 520, crossing lanes and even going off the roadway. One of the witnesses said the driver ran a red light and turned left onto Augusta Avenue, left the roadway and struck a gray Volkswagen.

The man stopped his car at a nearby business and fled on foot, witnesses said. Lytle went to the vehicle where he discovered two blue bags, one in the floorboard and another under the driver’s seat, the accident report said.
The contents of one bag field tested for meth while the other tested for cocaine.
WCSO Deputies Savannah Leslie and Chase Highsmith joined Lytle at the scene in the search for the man along with K-9 assistance from the Waycross Police Department.
Leslie discovered an orange shirt and black tank top discarded near where the man was last seen. She also found a Taurus 9mm pistol nearby and a fresh footprint in the mud.
A check of the firearm revealed it had been reported stolen last year.
Shortly thereafter, Highsmith saw a man who later was identified as Sermon emerge from the woods near the scene with wet pants and no shirt.
Sermon was taken into custody and transported to the jail on the charges.
