Bertie Allen to join The Times as community news columnist

Bertie Allen has joined The Blackshear Times as a new community news columnist.

Allen will take over the columnist’s position left vacant when Denise McGauley stepped down last month.

Allen will cover the social, church and neighborhood activities of the African American community.

“We are very pleased to have Mrs. Bertie join us,” said Times Publisher Matt Gardner. “She will be a great addition to our team.”

Mrs. Allen is the widow of Booker T. Dotson Jr. and Mr. Allen. She is a retired clerk from the Pierce County Public Library, formerly Blackshear Memorial Library. She retired in 2020 after 14 years of service. She also retired from being a cosmetologist, she was formerly a board member of Session Hill Community Center and she is an active member of Kingdom Faith Church of God in Christ in Blackshear. She is an ordained minister.

Mrs. Allen’s column is tentatively slated to start next week. Contact information will be announced at that time. Until then, news items for her column may be mailed to [email protected].
