PCHS Bear Facts

This week’s PCHS Bear Facts is a listing of hot topics for the week spanning June 7- 13.

We hope everyone is having a great summer break so far. Pierce County High School’s current summer hours are 8 a.m. -3 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays. The school will be closed  July 3-7.

Congratulations to Corbin Hunzeker & Ethan Murray for passing their Computer Science End of Pathway Assessment for the Computer Science pathway.  The instructor is Mr. Clint Hodges. Way to go, guys!

We salute Mrs. Amy Day for being named PCHS Teacher of the Year for the 2022-23 school year. We also salute Ms. Retta Rowe for being named School Nutrition Staff Employee of the Year at PCHS for 2022-2023. Thank you, ladies, for making excellence the standard!

Kudos to the following Lady Bears golfers for making All State for Class AA: Lily Spivey, Addyson Walker and Mackenzie Connell. Connell was also named the Class AA Player of the Year. The Lady Bears captured their second consecutive state title May 22 at Okefenokee Golf Club.

PCHS boys soccer celebrated its best and brightest at the program banquet May 23. Award winners included Saybein Drawsand (JV Most Improved), Houston Johnson (JV Standout), Walker Brown and Ceb Carter (Defensive Players of the Year), Clark Stovall (Leadership), Lane Doss and Ashton Bowen (Heart and Hustle),  Seth Stipe, Alex Merida, and Eric Merida (Most Improved), Jose Arzate (Coach’s Award), and Dylan Hersey (Teammate Award). Jonah Allen, Walker Brown, Lane Doss, and Clark Stovall were recognized as captains. New captain bands were presented to Clark Stovall, Ceb Carter, Alex Merida, and Ashton Bowen. Allen was recognized as Region 3-AA Player of the Year. Walker Brown, Lane Doss, Clark Stovall, and Ceb Carter received All-Region (1st team) honors while Ashton Bowen and Alex Merida received All-Region (2nd team) honors. Senior recognition included Jonah Allen, Walker Brown, Lane Doss, Jose Arzate, Spencer Hawkins, Patrick McDonald, Colin Waters, and Seth Stipe.

Varsity football held its banquet the last week of spring semester and honored many members of the 2022 Bears. D.J. Bell, Jacquez White, Jimarion Guyton, and Henry Peagler were all recognized for being named All-State by the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA). Bell was the Region 3-AA Player of the Year. All-Region (1st Team) honors went to Guyton, White, Peagler, Wade DiBiase, Carson Sloan, and Jonah Allen. All-Region (2nd Team) honors went to Elijah HOward, Matthew Taylor, Trent Moody, and Dixon Morris. Other honorees included Spencer Hutcheson (Sportsmanship Award), Bryson Hutcheson (Most Improved- Offense), Logan Clark (Most Improved- Defense), Ty Douberly and Campbell Strickland (Coaches Award), Jack Williams (Hustle Award), Carson Sloan (Iron Man Award), Jonah Allen (Special Teams Award), and Drake Dowling (JV Most Valuable Player).

Wrestling workouts are now underway. Today’s (Wednesday, June 7) schedule is 12:45- 2:30 P.M. with alternative practices from 5:45-7 p.m. (same schedule for June 12-14) Tomorrow from 6-8 p.m. It’s the Rumble in the Den at home. PCHS boys’ basketball activity is as follows: June 7 (weights @ 3:45, practice 4:30-6 p.m.), June 8 (home game vs. Coffee @ 3 p.m. for JV and varsity), June 9 (Coastal Georgia Team Camp for JV & varsity), June 12 (same as June 7), June 13 (game at Brantley, 3 p.m. for JV and varsity).

Lady Bears basketball practice is today from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., June 8 (game at Clinch Co. for JV & varsity), June 9 & 12 (practice, 10:30-12:30), June 13 (game at Liberty Co. for JV and varsity).

Volleyball practices every day this week in the G3 weightroom and the old gym. Softball works out in the FH weightroom. Competition cheer is at the ACE Cheer Camp this week.

Workouts for PCHS football begin June 12 and take place Mondays through Fridays (off July 3-7).  Freshmen players work out on Tuesdays and Thursdays only. Any questions should be directed to head coach Ryan Herring.

Summer School, which began June 5, continues today and tomorrow and concludes the week of June 12-15. Session 1 is  8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. daily, with session 2 taking place from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day.                                                                                                                                               ********

June 12-14 are the three days for upcoming seniors to make appointments for their senior pictures with the school’s senior pictures photographer, SWI. July 29th is make-up day.

Pierce County High Tennis Camp is slated for  June 12-13, 8:30 to 10:30 A.M. grades 1-5 and 10:30 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. for grades 6-8. Cost is $50. Campers need tennis shoes, a racquet, and a water bottle. Make checks payable to PCHS Tennis. Contact [email protected].

PCHS baseball holds its Youth Baseball Camp June 12-14 (9 A.M. to noon) for grades K-5 at PCHS Bears Baseball Stadium. Cost is $75. The Elite Baseball Camp is June 14 (12:30 - 3:30 p.m.) and June 15 (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) for grades 6-8. Cost is $60. Checks for either camp should be made payable to the PCHS Dugout Club, due day one of camp. Contact [email protected].

Join the PCHS Spirit Cheerleaders and learn cheers, chants, dances, and jumps at the annual cheer camp June 15 & 16 (9 a.m. to noon daily) in the PCHS gym. This is for cheer campers who have completed grades Pre-K through fifth grade.

PCHS soccer is hosting its annual youth soccer camp June 28-29 at the middle school (9:30 - 11;00 A.M.) This is for ages 8-12. Cost is $50 and may be paid the day of the camp. Contact [email protected]. PCHS Soccer Camp for ages 13+ will be July 17-19 at PCMS (9-11 a.m.) Cost is $15 per athlete and may be paid on the day of camp.

College of Coastal Georgia and Southeast Georgia Health System will be hosting the 2nd edition of Nurse Camp, July 11-14. Instruction is 9-4 daily, and there are two pricing options, including an overnight option for those students who want to stay on campus. Apply only by May 15 at sghs.org/nursecamp.
