Storms cause damage, power outages

Severe thunderstorms swept through Pierce County last week downing trees and power lines leading to roof damage and power outages. No juries were reported.

The most active weather was last Tuesday when the Pierce County Volunteer Fire Department (PCVFD) responded to 22 incidents in the county.

In Blackshear, the roof of the La Orquidea Store on Highway Avenue was blown off. Some damage to awnings was also reported downtown. In the Cason community, the steeple of Rehobeth Baptist Church was blown down.

Vivid lightning was also reported in the storms. Pierce County’s E-911 center sustained a lightning strike in a thunderstorm Thursday.

Storm reports were confined to the central and southern parts of the county including the Hacklebarney, Walkerville, Southside, Bearville, Sunset and Otter Creek communities and the City of Blackshear.  

The north side of the county including the Cities of Patterson and Offerman did not report any storm damage.
