Brantley County’s former recreation department facility has a new name — John Wilson Park — with the unveiling of the name and a ribbon cutting ceremony held Friday.
Family members and friends were on hand to witness the April 4 event. The park sits adjacent to the Brantley County Sheriff’s Office.
Wilson was chairman (1977-80) of the Brantley County Commission passing away January 22, 1980. He also served in many roles during a 32-year political career.
Wilson served as Tax Commissioner from 1953-73 and as clerk of the County Commission for 12 years. He was also a member of the Southeast Medical Board and was on the Southeast Georgia Planning Commission from 1977-80.
He was credited with doing more during his three years as chairman than anyone previously. During his tenure the courthouse was renovated, the jail rebuilt and a wing of the old Nahunta High School completely refinished for offices.
Wilson and his late wife, Hazel Morgan Wilson had four daughters, Dean Johns, Una Wilson, Anna Wilson and Melinda Wilson.
