Tiger Field renovations are one step closer to reality with the selection of an engineer to do the improvements there.
Commissioners selected Statewide Engineering of Douglas as the engineer for the project during their regular monthly meeting last Tuesday night.
Statewide had the highest score on the project with a 68.
Other bidders were T.R. Long Engineering of Statesboro at 56 and Hofstadter and Associates of Macon with a score of 55.
Scoring is based on the engineering company’s overall experience and experience working with federal and state grants, expertise, ability to supply the project, cost and knowledge of the community. The scoring was done by county employees.
Plans for improvements at Tiger Field have been in the works for the last two years.
The commission has committed up to $1 million in improvements at the field. The monies for the improvements will come from a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant and from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax and from the county’s general fund.
Improvements will include resurfacing the track, improving and adding parking and sidewalks that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), concrete pad for the bleachers, replacing field lighting and fencing.
Tiger Field has been in use in the county since 1958, when it was built as part of the facilities for Blackshear High School.Blackshear High School merged with Patterson High School to form Pierce County High School in 1982.
The county has used the field for recreation facilities since that time.
