March 22 hit and run victim identity released by coroner

Jennifer Harrington was the victim of the fatal hit and run accident on Cason Road March 22.

Coroner William Wilson announced last week that Harrington’s next of kin has been notified and she has been identified as the victim in the incident.

Harrington, 53, was reportedly living on McDuffie Street in Blackshear at the time of her death.

According to the official accident report from the Georgia State Patrol, Harrington was walking alongside her bicycle in the opposite direction of traffic flow in the the westbound lane on Cason Road near its intersection with Tuten Lane at 7:57 a.m. Saturday, March 22.

She was allegedly struck by a 2006 Chevy Silverado driven by Carlos Joaquin Espana, 45, of Blackshear.

Espana was traveling west and reportedly did not slow down or move to the other lane of traffic and struck Harrington. He then allegedly left the scene without rendering aid.

Harrington was thrown by the impact into the ditch on the north side of the highway. A passing motorist found her and called for help.

Harrington was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Coroner William Wilson.

Espana was arrested later that Saturday afternoon and has been charged with hit and run and homicide by vehicle.

A determination on Espana’s legal status through the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has not yet been confirmed.

He is currently being held in the Pierce County Jail.

Trooper Gentry Mattox of the Waycross post of the Georgia State Patrol investigated the accident.

The Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) was also called in to assist.
