Collision in Manor kills two semi truck drivers

Two men died Thursday morning as the result of a collision on Georgia 520 involving three tractor-trailer trucks, Ware County Coroner David Jordan said.

Identities of the men killed in the March 27 chain-reaction accident near Millwood were pending receipt of the Georgia State Patrol’s accident report being released out of Atlanta. An online public records request to the GSP Public Information Office for the report had not been received at press time.

Both of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene by Jordan. The driver of the third semi involved was not injured, according to authorities.

One of the drivers was in a Clayton Homes flatbed truck with the other in a Florida Rock & Tank Lines semi transporting diesel fuel, Jordan said.

According to statements to Ware County Sheriff’s Office personnel from the driver who survived and another witness, the accident occurred behind a Ware County school bus stopped to pick up students, WCSO Major Neil Skerratt said.

Authorities said neither the school bus nor its occupants were harmed.

Cpl. Theresa Wright responded to the 6:34 a.m. call of an accident on Georgia 520 near its intersection of Zion Hill Road, Skerratt said. While en route, Wright learned three tractor-trailers were involved and fatalities were possible, Skerratt said.

At the scene, Wright spoke to the truck driver who said he was stopped behind a school bus that was off the side of the road loading students. He said a second semi approached and stopped behind his semi truck.

The other witness said while the first two semis were stopped behind the bus, the third semi — a tanker — failed to slow down. It collided with the trailer of the second semi sending it into the first semi.

The accident affected traffic in the area well into the afternoon.

GSP Trooper Gentry Mattox investigated the accident.
