The Georgia State Patrol has released more details in the hit and run accident last week which resulted in the death of a Blackshear woman.
Authorities are still having difficulties locating a next-of-kin for the 53 year old woman.
The woman is believed to be a resident of Blackshear, but no address is listed on the accident report.
According to the report, the woman was walking alongside her bicycle in the opposite direction of traffic flow in the the westbound lane of Cason Road near its intersection with Tuten Lane at 7:57 a.m. Saturday, March 22.
She was allegedly struck by a 2006 Chevy Silverado driven by Carlos Joaquin Espana, 45, of Blackshear.
Espana was travelling west and reportedly did not slow down or move to the other lane of traffic and struck the woman.
He then allegedly left the scene without rendering aid.
The woman was thrown by the impact into the ditch on the north side of the highway. A passing motorist found her and called for help.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Coroner William Wilson.
Espana was arrested later Saturday afternoon and has been charged with hit and run and homicide by vehicle.
A determination on Espana’s legal status through the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has not yet been confirmed.
He is currently being held in the Pierce County Jail.
Trooper Gentry Mattox of the Waycross post of the Georgia State Patrol investigated the accident.
The Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) was also called in to assist.
