Lady Bears sixth, Bears ninth in ‘Friday Night Lights’ track meet
VALDOSTA — Pierce County’s Omar Jinks outclassed the 27-man field broken into five heats winning the 200-meter event here in the Friday Night Lights Wildcat Invitational hosted by Valdosta High School.
Jinks, running in the fifth heat, clocked a time of 22.74 seconds to beat the mark of 22.87 seconds posted by Jett Terrell of Lowndes one heat earlier in the March 28 meet. Ty Jennings of Lowndes, running with Jinks, posted the third fastest time at 22.95 seconds.
The Bears had two other Top 5 finishes with Joe Drew placing fourth in the 400m event with a time of 51.93 seconds. The 440m relay team finished fifth with a time of 3:44.07.
PCHS finished ninth in the boys’ March 28, 15-team event. Lowndes ran away with the team title piling up 160.5 points. Host Valdosta (88.5), Thomasville (80), Camden County (73.3), Dougherty (56.3) and Worth County (56.3) rounded out the top five positions.
Following the Rams were Appling County (49.5), Sumter County (29.5), PCHS (28), Treutlen (21), Colquitt County (20), Charlton County (18), Thomas County Central (12), Valwood (4) and Highland Christian (2).
The Lady Bears finished sixth in the 13team girls’ meet. The Lady Vikettes also ran away with the team title totaling 191.5 points. They were followed by Valdosta (96), Appling County (91), Thomasville (79) and Charlton County (57.5) in the top five positions.
The rest of the field included PCHS (38.5), Worth County (34), Camden County (29), Dougherty (23), Highland Christian (13.5), Sumter County (13), Thomas County Central (10) and Carver-Columbus (4).
Pierce County’s Caren Drew and Kaitlyn Sapp logged runner-up finishes. Drew was 10 inches short of the winning mark in the discus finishing with a throw of 99’2”. Sapp tied for second in the pole vault clearing the bar at seven feet.
The Lady Bears had four other Top 5 finishes. Drew placed third in the shot put with a heave of 34 feet. Kora Good and Azalea Mobley placed fourth in the respective events. Good cleared the high jump bar at 4’10” with Mobley flying 15’3” in the long jump.
PCHS’s 4x400m relay team also posted a fourth-place finish with a time of 4:41.01.
Many of the events had as many as 31 participants and was contested in as many as five heats except for the discus and shot put events.
Girls’ meet
The Lady Bears totaled 10 Top 10 finishes with four coming from 7th-place to 9th-place.
Ana Llamas-Diaz (7:32.19) placed seventh in the 1,600m. Both the 4x100m relay team (53.63) and the 4x200m relay team (1:59.22) finished eighth. Dominque Hightower (19.88 sec.) placed ninth in the 100m hurdles.
Recording 11th-places finishing were Jose’ziah James (1:07.32) in the 400m, Zanyria Monroe (55.22 sec.) in the 300m hurdles, Ana Llamas-Diaz (3:08.61) in the 800m and Saharah Minott (26’4”) in the shot put.
Layla Chandel (1:08.52) placed 12th in the 400m with Azalea Mobley (13.38 sec.) finishing 13th in the 100m. Finishing 14th were Jesslyn Moore (27’1”) in the triple jump and Zakeria Wilkins (73’4”) in the discus.
Kristin Clark (1:09.34) ran to a 15th-place showing in the 400m. Placing 16th were Dominque Hightower (59.28 sec.) in the 300m hurdles and Hannah Fandrich (24’11”) in the shot put.
Patience Smith (12’5”) was 19th in the long jump, Layla Chandel (29.46 sec.) 21st in the 200m and Kristin Clark (29.73 sec.) 23rd in the 200m.
Azalea Mobley (30.18 sec.) finished 24th in the 200m, Saharah Minott (50’6.25”)25th in the discus, Jesslyn Moore (14.44 sec.) 26th in the 100m and Patience Smith (14.53 sec.) 27th in the 100m.
Boys’ meet
The Bears posted 11 Top 10 performances with eight coming from 7th-place to 10thplace.
PCHS had four seventh-place finishes recorded by Omar Jinks (11.24 sec.) in the 100m, Braden McKendree (44.56 sec.) in the 300m hurdles, Joe Drew (41’5”) in the triple jump and the 4x100m relay team (43.89sec.).
The 4x800m relay team (9:55.72) placed eighth. Logging ninth-places finishes were Jordan Williams (42’5.50”) in the shot put and Amir Mckenzie (5’10”) in the high jump. The 4x200m relay team (1:38.55) ran to a 10th-place showing.
Posting 12th-place finishes were Breck Benton (5:43.78) in the 1,600m, Joeshua McBride (54.49 sec.) in the 400m and Leland Williams (101’11”) in the discus.
Landon Rainey (14:03.06) recorded a 14th-place showing in the 3,200m. Coleman Lee (6:32.27) placed 15th in the 1,600m while Carson Hope (95’7”) was 16th in the discus.
Finishing 17th were Yontareon Moore (19.20 sec.) in the 110m hurdles and Sam Braddock in both the 200m (24.13 sec.) and the the long jump (18’5”).
Placing 18th were Joeshua McBride (18’4.50”) in the long jump and K'don Lashley (35’7.50”) in the shot put. Brandon Yepes (2:26.54) finished 19th in the 800m.
Copping 22nd-place finishes were Micah Bryant (2:28.52) in the 800m and DeMontre Clark (24.93 sec.) in the 200m. Noah Delaney (50.60 sec.) placed 23rd in the 300m hurdles.
Finishing 24th were Terry Gibbs (58.39 sec.) in the 400m, William McQuaig (2:31.06) in the 800m and Trenton Kennedy (34’8”) in the shot put, who also placed 26th in the discus (73’9.50”).
David Herring (56.08 sec.) finished 27th in the 300m hurdles with Noah Delaney (12.22 sec.) 30th in the 100m.
