Georgia Farm Dog contest looking for a furry, four-legged farmhand

Georgia Farm Bureau (GFB) is on a mission to recognize a furry farm hero through its 2025 Georgia Farm Dog Contest.

The contest is open to GFB members ages 18 and over. Judging for the contest will take place in May. GFB is accepting entries for the contest until 10:59 p.m. May 1 or until 200 entries are received, whichever comes first.

Seeking to recognize the special role dogs play on Georgia farms, the contest consists of two rounds of evaluation by judges selected by GFB. The judges will apply specific criteria as detailed on the nomination forms to decide which of the nominated dogs plays an important enough role on the farm or ranch, assisting and lightening the workload and enriching the farm family’s life through faithful companionship, to the extent that it should be recognized as Farm Dog of the Year.

GFB believes dogs serve in a variety of roles such as herding and guarding livestock and protecting property. Farm dogs also provide companionship and joy to their families. Many dogs accompany farmers every step of the way as their owners complete daily chores.

The 2024 winner of GFB’s first Georgia Farm Dog Contest was Belue, a Shetland Sheepdog from Americus. Belue works sheep and cattle for his owner, Brinson Brock, and attends the middle school agricultural classes that Brock teaches to encourage students’ interest in veterinary science.

The winning dog and its human will be recognized in October at the 2025 Sunbelt Ag Expo. The grand prize winner will receive a $500 gift card.
