Rarely do we meet people who live solely to bring joy to others, but Brantley County had its own quilter keeper who left behind quite the legacy.
Myrle Strickland Lee was a lifelong native of Hickox. Her light shone bright on everyone she met.
Wherever there was a need or a way Mrs. Lee could brighten someone’s day, she jumped at the opportunity. What began as a hobby, led to hundreds of lives being touched.
Her sister, Marion Clements, organized a group called Project Lindsey in memory of her own grandd aughter. Project Lindsey, comprised of just a few ladies, made and donated over 1,000 quilts to the hospital in Brunswick for sick children over the years.
Mrs. Lee would also make quilts for sick people within our community. However, the greatest devotion to her quilt ministry was for the residents of Bayview Nursing Home.
Over the years, she was a faithful visitor and typically did so multiple times weekly. She would make quilts and neck pillows for each new resident.
She would be delighted when a new face arrived so she could get to know that person as well.
One time, a new resident asked her, “if you see that little old lady who gives out quilts, can you tell her I want one?”
Little did the lady know she was talking to that very woman. Mrs. Lee joked with her family that “you must be getting old when the people at the old folks home say so.”
Even when she herself was at Bayview for rehab, she made her rounds to visit and spread kindness.

As a final testament to her selflessness and passion for all at Bayview (including the staff), the quilt she hand stitched to be draped upon her casket is being donated to the Bayview Nursing Home, which grants her last wish.
