It’s time for spring cleaning in Waycross.
The city begins its cleanup program for residents Monday, March 31 that will allow them to dispose of items such as old furniture and other general household refuse for free.
The cleanup lasts five weeks — one week in each of city’s five commission districts — and is a bi-annual event started three years ago. There’s also a fall cleanup period.
Residents in Waycross Commission District 1 will be the first designated participants in the campaign. The container will be in the turnaround area of E.E. Moore Park March 31-April 6.
The remainder of the schedule is:
• District 2: April 7-12 April 8-13, Elizabeth Park, Howe Street.
• District 3: April 1420, Garlington Park, 1501 George Street.
• District 4: April 2127, Monroe Park, 1121 Hill Street.
• District 5: April 28May 5, Oakland Cemetery, 2410 Alice Street.
Construction is taking place to upgrade facilities and equipment in Elizabeth and Garlington so the container may move from day to day on the grounds.
Citizens don’t need to wait until their designated week to place items in a container. A container, regardless of location, will be open to any resident or property owner.
All items should be placed in the container and not left on the ground in the area and there’s no limit on the number of deposits.
Some items are prohibited in the collection. Among those are tires, containers of paint, solvents, chemicals or pesticides, building materials, tree removal debris, bricks or blocks.
The city is soliciting help from youth and civic organizations as well as churches and other groups with the effort to aid the portion of the community unable to move and transport items from their property.
Groups interested in helping may call Business and Integration & Information Systems Director Patrick Simmons at (912) 490-2109.
