Fleming Milledge, member of the Offerman City Council for almost two decades and a long-time community and church leader, passed away last Tuesday evening, June 20 at the HCA Florida Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, FL, following a short illness. He was 82.
Milledge was elected to the Offerman City Council in 1996 when the city was re-chartered. He had served on the council since that time.
A long-time leader in the community and in his church, Milledge was an accomplished brick mason and at various times owned a night club, car wash and restaurant and also did farm work.
He was a former member of the Consolidated Men’s Club of Pierce County, board member of the Pierce County Training School (PCTS) and an active member of the Edward “Bud” Newton Community Center, Patterson.
He enjoyed singing in the Macedonia Baptist Church choir where he was an active member.
He is remembered this week for his kindness and his service to all he met.
“Offerman lost one of its finest citizens,” said Offerman Mayor Brenda Denison. “(He) had been a great supporter of this city all his life. He had a smile that made everyone around him feel happier. He had a heart of gold and would, as the old saying goes, ‘give you the shirt off his back’. He loved his wife, family and friends with that big old heart of gold. He will be missed by all. He made our world brighter.”
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 24, from the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Patterson.
