Marshard McKnight, a native of Waycross, left an undeniable mark on Ware County High School football, establishing himself as one of the most prolific quarterbacks in program history.

A proud graduate in the Class of 2001, McKnight’s legacy is cemented in the Georgia state record books, where he still holds several passing records more than 25 years later, including most passing yards in a season (3,101), most passing yards in a game (424) and most passing touchdowns in a game (six). His name stands alongside some of Georgia’s greatest quarterbacks, many of whom went on to play in the NFL.

McKnight’s journey as an athlete began well before his quarterback days. As a 14-year-old freshman, he started on varsity at free safety, leading the team with three interceptions and earning all-Region honors in one of Georgia’s most competitive classifications.

When a new coaching staff arrived during his junior year, there were doubts about his ability to throw in an option-based system. McKnight was initially set to play running back.

However, he proved the skeptics wrong, becoming Georgia’s leading passer in 1999 and finishing just 87 yards shy of the state’s single-season passing record.

One of McKnight’s most memorable games came against Lowndes High in Valdosta. At the time, the Vikins were ranked third while Ware County was fourth.

It felt like the entire city of Waycross made the trip to support the Gators. That night, Ware County delivered a statement victory, defeating Lowndes 56-37. In that electrifying matchup, McKnight accounted for 324 passing yards and four touchdows, 93 rushing yards and three touchdowns solidifying his reputation as a dominant dual-threat quarterback.

McKnight’s athleticism wasn’t confined to the football field. He was also a standout basketball player, helping lead Ware County to a region championship during his senior year.

Making varsity as a freshman in both sports, McKnight showcased his exceptional talent early on. His success earned him a full scholarship to play football at the University of Rhode Island, further solidifying his place among Ware County’s all-time greats.

Beyond sports, McKnight made a lasting impact in the world of music. As a member of the Waycross- based rap group, The S.E. GA Boys, he gained international recognition for his song “Georgia,” a tribute to his home state that resonated with audiences far and wide.

His contributions to the community extended even further when he founded Georgia Day Weekend, an annual celebration held during Ware County High School’s graduation weekend. Since its inception, the event has grown into a beloved tradition, bringing people together to celebrate Georgia’s rich heritage.

In May 2025, Georgia Day Weekend will mark its 21st anniversary, a testament to McKnight’s enduring commitment to his community.

McKnight’s success was shaped by the many mentors, coaches, and teachers who believed in him along the way. Andrew and Shawanna Taylor were like a second set of parents, supporting him both on and off the field.

His middle school math and English teachers, Charles Taylor and Betsy Clark, instilled lessons that have stayed with him for over 30 years.

Before he made a name for himself at Ware County, his flag football and peewee coaches — Tim O’Berry, Dale Starling, Leon Carr and Rudy Solomon — recognized his potential as a quarterback before he even believed in himself. They gave him the opportunity to lead, instilled discipline, and helped him win a championship every year under their coaching.

McKnight acknowledges that without their guidance, belief, and mentorship, his journey wouldn’t have been the same.

McKnight

At the core of McKnight’s story is his unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. He attributes his success to God, his mother Linda George-Moody, his brother Larry McKnight and his sister Jasmine Mitchell.

He is also a devoted husband to Sade McKnight and a loving father to his four children, DeJhora, Madisyn, Marvelous and Memphis.
