HICKOX – Mr. Wallace “Read” Carter, 80, of Hickox passed away Wednesday morning, March 19, 2025 at his residence after an extended illness.
Born in Savannah, Carter’s parents were Wallace Edward Carter, Arline Dickerson Howard and Conway “Connie” Howard. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Wade Howard and Jimmy Cobb; and two sisters, Glenda Willis and Tootie Lee.
Carter served in the United States Air National Guard and retired after many years as assistant superint endent for the Brantley County School System.
He loved rebuilding cars, driving his tractor, singing, playing the guitar and watching videos of George Strait and Charlie Pride with Tuff. Most of all he loved the Lord and his family and always enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play ball. He was a true man of God who devoted his life to leading his family toward Jesus.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Linda Batten Carter of Hickox; five daughters and sonsin- law, Connie Colley (Vance) of Patterson, Carole Ann Gill (Richard), Mary Lowther (Ed), Reada Harris (Christopher) and Susan Thomas (Frank), all of Hickox; 19 grandchildren, Austin Colley, Megan Colley, Mary Beth Dixon, Caroline Rebollo, Carter Lynn Teatsorth, Grace Ann Carelock, Walker Gill, Lindy Hall, Maggie Harris, Summer Colley, Kent Thomas, Zary Harris, Edie Lowther, Eli Thomas, Read Thomas, Josie Harris, Jayle Thomas, Tuff Lowther and Ander Harris; one great grandchild, Andi Rebollo and four on the way; one brother and sister-in-law, Tom Howard (Bonnie) of Hickox; one sister, Marty Morgan of Nahunta; two brothers-in-law, Robert Willis and William Lee, both of Hoboken; and a sister-in-law, Ruby Howard of Hickox; also several nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
A funeral service was held Friday, March 21, 2025 at Riverside Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Wainright, Rev. Tom Kennedy, Rev. Frank Thomas and Rev. Vance Colley officiating.
Burial followed in the Riverside Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Steven Howard, Randall Howard, Ashley Howard, John Lee, Carroll Lee, Darren Crews, Andy Willis, Alan Morgan and Chuck Allen.
Arrangements were with Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.
