A Blackshear woman was killed and a man has been arrested Saturday morning in a hit and run accident on Cason Road near Tuten Lane just outside the city limits of Blackshear.
Details have been hard to come by and are still being confirmed, but The Times has learned from official sources that a female cyclist was struck and killed about 8 a.m. Saturday morning.
The name of the woman has been withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.
Coroner William Wilson confirmed the fatality, but declined additional comment.
Sources indicate officials are having difficulty locating the woman’s family.
Law enforcement arrested a suspect in the case a few hours after the incident Saturday.
Carlos Garcia Espana has been charged with hit and run and homicide by vehicle.
Local authorities are still awaiting confirmation of Espana’s legal status through the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
He is currently being held in the Pierce County Jail.
Sheriff Ramsey Bennett confirmed these details of the accident but referred all inquiries to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP). The GSP was called in to investigate the accident.
The GSP declined comment prior to press time Monday, citing the ongoing investigation.
