Monthly blood drive scheduled for Mon.

Special to the WJH Walker Jones Automotive continues its long relationship with the Waycross Area Blood Drive Volunteers as sponsor of Monday’s community blood drive.

Among the most dependable and longest serving sponsors, Walker Jones, is financing the March 24 monthly effort to make it possible for a host of random blood donors to take home a cash prize.

The drive runs from 10 a.m. through 6 p.m. at the Waycross Exchange Club fairgrounds, 2401 Knight Avenue.

The Red Cross is counting on faithful donors to fill an urgent void. A shortage of emergency blood has prompted an appeal.

“We need all blood types, especially O-positive and O-negative,” said Tina Etheridge, Valdosta Red Cross. “Many donors have received a phone call to this end, urging donations. Others have received emails.”

She said all of Monday’s donors will receive a $10 egift card via email from the Red Cross.

“One happy donor will win $100 at random, thanks to Walker Jones,” said said Gary Griffin, one of the Waycross Area Blood Drive Volunteers.

There also will be other cash prizes of $50 and $20 for donors.

“We also will give away Jerry J’s and Breezy’s Boutique gift certificates,” said Griffin, who added the odds of each donor flipping over a door prize card will be better than 3 to 1.

“Therefore we need our donors to return as often as they can to fight against the shortfall of emergency blood. And we need new donors to get into the habit of giving. When someone gives, someone lives.”

“Volunteering at the monthly drives is easy and fun,” he said. “If you want to check us out, just visit a drive and see for yourself. Most of our volunteers work a two- or three-hour shift, greeting the donors and offering them juices and refreshments. But you can stay as long or as short as you’d like.”

Donors always have locally contributed refreshments from Waycross Coca-Cola and Domino’s Pizza after their donation.
