Third WCHS bass fishing team earns state berth

LINCOLNTON — The two-person team of Grant Geiger and Colt Cox secured a berth in the GHSA state bass fishing tournament March 8 in the second qualifier of the season.

Geiger and Cox, whose weight of five fish totaled 14 lbs., 4 oz. to finish 12th, joining the teams of Evan Geiger and Mason Tyre and Cody Gay and Clary Kinnon with berths in the May 3 finals to be held at Lake Lanier.

The qualifier at Clarks Hill Lake was the second of three left on the schedule after poor weather conditions from Winter Storm Enzo forced the cancellation of the January 25 tourney scheduled for Lake Seminole.

The final qualifier is scheduled for Saturday, April 5 at West Point.

There were 233 teams consisting of 446 student anglers completing for spots on Clarks Hill Lake. A total of 128 teams landed at least one bass with 105 being shutout.

A total of 424 fish were caught weighing a combined 874 lbs., 13 oz. The biggest bass weight seven lbs., with a big sack of 19 lbs., 3 oz., by winners Maddox Ferrell and Finley Edwards from the South Forsyth War Eagles.

One other Ware County team, Cody Gay and Clary Kinnon, logged a Top 25 spot finishing 22nd with 11 lbs., 5 0z., with their limit of five fish. The pair qualified in February finishing fifth (37th overall) among the registered teams for Lake Seminole.

The duo of Waylon Smith and Kyler Mathews tied for 47th with 7 lbs., 9 oz., for their five fish. Kolton Taft and Andrew Wilson (two fish) finished in a three-way tie for 93rd with 2 lbs., 13 oz.

The Evan Giger-Tyre team and the Marc Taylor-Landon Walker team did not post a weight.
