Lady Herons third at tourney, unbeaten in region

Brantley County’s Lady Herons’ tennis program remained unbeaten in Region 1-A play and finished third at the Lowndes Viking Invitational tournament among their six wins in seven matches.

The Lady Herons (13-4 overall 50 region) rolled to a 5-0 victory Tuesday, March 4 in Sylvester against Worth County. BCHS escaped with a 3-2 win Thursday, March 6 against visiting Berrien.

Brantley County had its fivematch winning streak end Friday, March 7 in the first round of the Lowndes Viking Invitational tournament falling 3-2 to Colquitt County.

The Lady Herons bounced back with a 4-0 victory against Camden County and a 4-0 consolation win over West Laurens.

Both Raylee Strickland and Haley Jane Smith went undefeated with 60 records. Harlee Driggers and Savannah Carroll were each 2-1. Brodie Allen notched a 1-2 mark with Brooklyn Wildes losing her only match.

BCHS closed out the next to last week of the regular season with a 41 victory Tuesday, March 11 over visiting Pierce County. The Lady Herons blanked region foe Fitzgerald 4-0 on the road.

BCHS hosted Bacon County Tuesday, March 18 on Senior Recognition day. The Lady Herons close out the regular season Wednesday, March 26 with a date at Valdosta.

Brantley County will host a “Train with the Champs” camp Tuesday, March 25 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., for K-5 students.

SYLVESTER — Brantley County dropped four games in overpowering the Lady Rams.

Wildes prevailed 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles over Laney Goff in the closest match. Ralee Strickland notched a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 2 over Cadie Turner. Smith blanked Lilly Reynolds 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3.

The No. 1 doubles team of Summer Colley and Bri Crews recorded a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Ann Hughh and Lauren Griffis. The No. 2 tandem of Driggers and Carrol notched a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Brooklyn Crenshaw and Jaheira Morse.

In a jayvee match, Allen and Cheryl Tencza posted an 8-2 decision.

CANEY BAY — A sweep of the singles action clinched the victory for the Lady Herons against Berrien.

Wildes notched a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Joci Holbrok at No. 1. Strickland eased to a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 2 over Emmi Warren. Smith recorded her second shutout of the week rolling 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 over Emery Lane.

The Lady Rebels swept the doubles action in straight sets. Colley and Driggers fell 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 to Alli Butler and Sarah Nugent. Carroll and Allen dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 2 to Kayla Wiley and Braelyn Corsey.

CANEY BAY — A sweep of the single competition and a split in doubles gave the Lady Herons the win in a tightly contested match.

Wildes posted a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Mattie Lee at No. 1 singles, Strickland turned back M.K. Weatherington 6-3, 62 at No. 2 and Smith outlasted Jasmine Sergent 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 at No. 3.

The No. 1 doubles team of Colley and Crews survived 7-5, 6-3 against Eva Horne and Riley Chambliss. The No. 2 team of Driggers and Carroll suffered a 62, 6-2 loss to Addie Brown and E.K. Higginson.

FITZGERALD — The Lady Herons had an easy time in beating Fitzgerald dropping just two games in the four completed matches.

The singles action ended with three 60, 6-0 victories. Wildes beat Bella Bryant, Strickland downed Miley Grace Young and Smith knocked off Lily Belle Renfroe.

Colley and Crews cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles over Molli Cleghorn and Madison Carroll. The No. 2 match of Carroll and Driggers against Ella Roberts and Lilly Stubbs was halted by rain.
