September 26 and 27, 2024 were like no others in recent memory in Pierce County and southeast Georgia.
A little over six months ago, Hurricane Helene swept through our county, leaving a profound impact on our community.
Assistant Fire Chief Leon Davis of the Blackshear Fire Department gave his life protecting and serving our community during the storm.
The storm also left virtually every family without access to essential resources like water and power some for days and others for nearly two weeks.
Like always, Pierce County pulled together to bear one another’s burdens and to help our neighbors, friends and loved ones.
In the midst of such sorrow and destruction, we also witnessed the best of us.
There were churches delivering meals.
Ice and water were donated to those in need.
We had families hosting out-of-town linemen.
The Red Cross came to our aid.
We often take many things in this life for granted, but when without them, we realize how much we have to appreciate.
One such group of people are our public safety personnel and first responders.
In the face of such adversity, one constant source of support has been our Hometown Heroes. These brave individuals, including our dedicated firefighters, police officers, first responders, linemen and countless volunteers, stepped up in remarkable ways to assist those in need during and after the storm. Their selfless actions and unwavering commitment to our community truly exemplify the spirit of compassion and service.
Now, more than ever, it's important for us to express our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for their hard work and dedication. This is the perfect moment to say 'Thank You' to every person who contributed to the safety and well-being of our community during this difficult time.
Our last publication of this edition was in 2016, and I believe there is no better time than now to bring it back, celebrating the resilience and strength of our community while shining a spotlight on those who have gone above and beyond to serve others.
Let’s come together and recognize the incredible efforts of these extraordinary individuals who make our community a safer and better place to live.
If you are out and see one of these fine folks, please give them a high five, fist bump or a ‘thank you’.
It is the least we can do for those who give so much to all of us.
