Dickey honored from Ware Fire & Rescue
Firefighter Marcus Dickey received the Public Safety Officer of the Year during the Waycross Exc hange Club’s Public Safety Officer of the Year Banquet held Thursday, February 27 at the Exchange Club’s meeting hall.
Ware County Fire Rescue Chief Dee Meadows nominated Dickey for the award, a man whose life story exemplifies courage, service, and dedication. Though relatively new to the department, Dickey’s extensive background in the military and volunteer firefighting, paired with his unwavering commitment to his community, make him a standout candidate.
Born in Augusta, Dickey’s early years took him across North Carolina and Mississippi before he returned to his home state, graduating from Ware County High School. His diverse experiences shaped a deep-rooted sense of community — a value that would guide his life’s path.
After high school, Dickey answered a call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army. Over a distinguished 10-year career, he rose to the rank of sergeant, completing an impressive five deployments to Bosnia and two to Iraq.
His military service honed his leadership skills, teamwork and resilience — qualities that now shine in his work as a firefighter.
Following his honorable discharge, Dickey continued his commitment to public service within the prison system, working in Nicholls, Indianapolis, Ind., and later Bacon County.
It was in Bacon County that his passion for firefighting took root. For six years, he served as a volunteer firefighter, risking his life to protect his neighbors without expecting anything in return.
“This commitment, done without compensation, speaks volumes about his character,” Chief Meadows noted in the nomination.
In January 2024, Dickey transitioned to a full-time role with Ware County Fire Rescue. Though his tenure with the department spans just over a year, his prior experience and disciplined work ethic have already made a significant impact.
“Marcus brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the importance of teamwork to our team,” Meadows remarked. “His military background and volunteer service have prepared him exceptionally well for this role.”
Beyond his professional achievements, Dickey is a devoted father to his 14year-old daughter. In his downtime, he enjoys fishing and attending concerts, reflecting a well-rounded personality that balances service with a love for life.
“Marcus Dickey’s life is a testament to selfless service,” Meadows added. “From his military deployments to his volunteer firefighting and now his full-time role with us, he consistently puts the needs of his community and country first. His bravery and dedication make him an exceptional candidate for Firefighter of the Year.”
