June Carol Lucas Sweat, 76, of Blackshear, died early Wednesday morning, July 12, 2023, at the Hospice Satilla Hospice House in Waycross, after an extended illness.
She was born in Waycross to the late Gordon D. Galbreath and Margaret Melvin Galbreath. She retired as a registered nurse with Unison Behavioral Health and also worked as the school nurse for Waycross Middle School and in the operating room at Memorial Satilla Health. She was a member of Gilchrist Park United Methodist Church. She enjoyed going to yard sales and flea markets. She was the best “Horse Mom”, who was willing to do and sacrifice anything to make sure her daughter Beth had everything she needed to pursue her love of horses. More than anything, she loved her family and cherished every moment she was able to spend with them. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert D. Lucas Jr.; her brother, Troy Herbert Thomas, her brother-in-law, George Michael Freeman and her step son-in-law, Warren Blake Lee.
Survivors include her husband, George L. Sweat, Blackshear; two children, Bobby Crowe and his wife Vanessa, Waycross and Beth Merritt and her husband Casey, Millwood; her sister, Linda Freeman, Blackshear; three step-children, Cassie Lee, Blackshear, David Lucas, Douglas and Timmy Lucas, Waycross; nine grandchildren, Garrett Crowe and his wife Hannah, Tyler Crowe and his wife Mariah, Alyssa Crowe, Zoe Crowe, Lydia Merritt, Lillian Merritt, Sawyer Merritt, Kamden Sweat and Karson Lee; two great-grandsons, Luke Crowe and Liam Crowe and numerous other relatives.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 14, at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 15, from the Gilchrist Park United Methodist Church.
Interment will follow in Blackshear City Cemetery.
