Girls basketball tournament comp laint/protest: McKayla Carter, a coach for the girls 10U basketball team, addressed the board about incidents of poor sportsmanship, vulgarity, threats and intimidation that occurred during the girls’ district tournament in Bacon County Saturday, March 1. New/renovated complex: Rec board chairman Chris Wright suggested using bonds to help finance the recreation expansion project.

Director’s report: Recreation Director Maureen Brown reported Pierce County Recreation Department hosted the 8u and 14u district basketball tournament. Brown reported large crowds at the tournament and said everything went well. The department received $4,362 in gate revenue and $1,483 in concession revenue during the tournament. Brown pointed out additional funds came in to the community by recreation participants spending money at local restaurants and service stations. The 8u boys basketball team will be advancing to the state tournament in Rabun County next week. The director thanked the school system for allowing the use of the high school gym during a portion of the tournament. Brown reported spring sports should get underway after spring break in early April. The baseball/ softball program has 313 participants this year, down one from last year’s total. The soccer program has 148 participants, down 53 from last year. Brown said spring sports passes and tickets will soon go on sale at the department. The director also discussed plans for the upcoming Recreation Department Olympics planned for Saturday, March 15. A total of 250 children participated in last year’s Olympics and Brown said she is hoping for similar participation numbers this year. Brown and Board Chairman Wright said plans are moving forward for implementing a recreation app like Parent Square used by the school system. The recreation app will allow the department to notify parents about sign ups, schedule changes, field availability and weather cancellations. Details will be announced as they become available.
Next meeting: The next monthly meeting will be held at 8 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, at the Southeast Georgia Regional Agriculture Center (SEGARAC) on College Avenue.
