Big Lots maintains operations with new ownership

Special to the WJH Variety Wholesalers has announced the store formerly known as Big Lots will remain open under new ownership.

The store, located in the Satilla Shopping Mall on Knight Avenue, is one of approximately 200 Big Lots stores which will remain open for business. Stores in Brunswick (Altama Avenue) and Valdosta (East Northside Drive) also will remain open.

Variety Wholesalers additionally owns Bargain Town, Maxway, Bill’s Dollar Stores, Roses Express, and Roses Discount outlets.

Big Lots began having going-out-of-business sales at all of its stores to “protect the value of its estate” in December 2024. The company asserted that cutting store prices wouldn’t stop it from selling to third parties in the future, however.

Later in the month, the company reported that it was able to save between 200 and 400 of its stores by striking the deal with Gordon Brothers and Variety Wholesalers, keeping Big Lots from having to completely liquidate its assets.

Big Lots placed hundreds of stores up for sale after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. However, many locations will remain open, operating under the original name, though under new ownership.

According to Newsweek, Big Lots is seeking assistance during the bankruptcy process from Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, a Boston-based asset liquidation company.

Since first announcing that it would close 545 of 1,389 locations by January, Big Lots has put more stores on the chopping block.

Some of the locations are being taken over by Variety Wholesalers. This covers Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, West Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
