Special to the WJH A group of students who successfuly completed the Coastal Pines Technical College’s Adult Education Program’s English Second Language/ Civics curriculum recently earned United States citizenship.

The 10 students participated in the citizenship ceremony Saturday, February 22 on the Waycross Campus. The course prepared the students to pass the naturalization test to officially earn citizenship.

The students were Maria Catalan, Susana Barreto, Ma Prado, Yasmilka Sanchez, Norma Ortega, Daniel de la Mira, Alex Ruiz, Ali Lanjani, Fahimeh Eyvazi, and Jose Cruz.

In addition to learning English, the students were exposed to American civics and the workings of the government as well as its history in the selfpaced program.

“Because adult education provides the foundation for lifelong learning, it empowers individuals to become self-sufficient, enhances critical thinking skills, and helps reduce inequality by enabling everyone to contribute meaningfully to their community,” said Katrena Felder, Executive Director of CPTC’s Adult Education Program.

Eugenia Evans, Adjunct Adult Education ESL/Civics Instructor at CPTC, has dedicated more than two decades to providing instruction that equips the program’s students with the knowledge necessary to pass their citizenship test and/or earn their High School Equivalency (HSE)/GED diploma.

ESL/Civics classes are specifically designed to teach essential U.S. history, government structure, and civic responsibilities while helping students develop the English language proficiency needed for their naturalization interview and test.
