U.S. 84 chase ends in PIT maneuver

A Blackshear man was arrested last Saturday, Feb. 22, after leading law enforcement officers on the high speed chase down U.S. Highway 84 that was ended using the pursuit intervention technique (PIT) maneuver.

Cliff Hunter Crummey, 32, was arrested and charged with two counts of fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer, two counts of obstruction of law enforcement officers, driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, interference with government property, using wrong signal, headlight violation, failure to obey stop sign, failure to drive in a single lane, seatbelt violation and open container.

According to a report by the Georgia State Patrol, law enforcement officers attempted to stop Crummey for a traffic violation on U.S. Highway 84.

Crummey, driving a 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 pick-up truck west on U.S. 84, fled from officers.

Trooper First Class Brandon Smith, post commander of the Waycross Post, performed the PIT maneuver on U.S. Highway 84 near Nursery Road. Smith, driving a marked state patrol 2022 Dodge Durango with lights and siren activated, performed the PIT maneuver in the interest of public safety.

SFC Smith struck the passenger side rear end of Crummey’s truck leading the vehicle to spin out. The Crummey vehicle rotated 182 feet before striking a utility pole in the north ditch facing south.

Crummey was transported to Memorial Satilla Health in Waycross for treatment but was released and taken in to custody.

Crummey is currently being held in the Pierce County Jail.
