MACON — Brantley County’s Aurora Edwards placed fifth here at the Macon Centreplex in the Girls’ All-Classification Traditional state wrestling tournment.
Edwards (190-lb. class) was one of two Lady Herons wrestling at the Thursday, February 13 and Friday, February 14 state tournament. Maggie Devine (170) entered unbeaten and ranked among the Top 15 wrestlers in the state for all weight classes.
Brantley County finished with 19 points finishing in a three-way tie for 40th in the field of 106 schools represented.
The Top 10 schools were Lumpkin County (92), Jefferson (72.5), Carrollton (71), Jordan (68), North Oconee (57), Osborne (47), Gilmer (43), McEachern (41), Cherokee (39) and Troup (36).
Edwards (35-5) won her first two matches via pinfall to reach the semifinals. She pinned (33 seconds) Archer’s Payton McDougald and Carrollton’s Journey Gray (1:21).
Jefferson’s Ava Catledge ended Edwards’ championship dream with a pin (1:50) in the semis. After suffering a pin (3:32) in the consolation semifinals to McEachern’s Victoria Ramos, Edwards pinned (1:15) North Oconee’s Vera McCluthen in the fifth-place match.
Devine (31-2) extended her unbeaten streak to 31 matches pinning (57 sec.) South Cobb’s Kristin Briggs in the opening round. Devine suffered her first defeat of the year via pin (1:44) in the quarterfinals to Woodstock’s Ashley Saucedo, who went on to finish third. Richmond Hill’s Isla Stotts followed with a pin (1:47) in the consolation bracket.
