County jail generated nearly $27,000 from inmate housing in June

The Pierce County Jail generated almost $27,000 in revenue in June for housing inmates for other law enforcement agencies.

Sheriff Ramsey Bennett issued the report to the board of commissioners for their meeting last week.

The Charlton County Sheriff’s Office paid $19,575 for 425 days of housing. Clinch County was second with $5,625 for 125 days and Wayne County was third with $1,620 for 36 days. The City of Blackshear’s Police Department paid $161.72 for four days of housing during the month.

A 93-bed addition to the Pierce County Jail was opened last year. The expansion increased the jail’s capacity to 165.

Sheriff Bennett said at the time the expansion would allow Pierce County to stop paying to have inmates housed outside of the county and would instead allow Pierce County to house out-of-county inmates and generate revenue from the service.
