Ware County’s girls basketball team began play Tuesday night at home in the GHSA Class AAAA tournament as Region 1 champions after defeating third-ranked Warner Robins 46-39 Wednesday, February 12 in the title game at Warner Robins. The loss was the first of the season for the top-seeded Demonettes (24-1), who had beaten Ware County (23-4) in their previous nine meetings. The region crown was the third in as many seasons for the Lady Gators, who won Region 1-AAAAA titles the previous two seasons. Ware County played host to St. Pius X (16-12), the fourth seed from Region 5, in Tuesday’s state tournament opener. The Lady Gators were joined in the state tournament by the Ware County boys, who traveled to Tucker Tuesday for their playoff game. Read more on tournament action on Page 1B.
