WCHS’s Williams is Coach of Yr., four Gators are selected all-Region

Ware County’s second- place finish in the Region 1-AAAA regular season standings was recognized with head coach Lenny Williams being named Coach of the Year and four Gator players being honored with First and Second Team all-Region selections in voting by the coaches.

Benedictine’s Caleb Jones was named the Player of the Year. Jones has led the Cadets, who lost the region championship game to Warner Robins, to a 20-5 record scoring at a 31.8 points per game clip.

Williams, in his second season, has the Gators knocking on the door for their first 20-win season in more than two decades. That follows a 16-11 mark last year ending a stretch of seven consecutive losing seasons dating back to the 2016-17 campaign.

Williams posted a 108-34 mark at Woodville-Tompkins during his five-year stint with three 20-plus win seasons highlighted by a 29-1 mark in 2018-19 when he led Wolverines to a semifinal appearance in the Class AA state tournament losing to eventual champion Elbert County Woodville-Tompkins was 54-5 during Williams’ last two seasons.

Ware County was represented on the all-Region First Team by Jarvis Wright and Darius Ward. Warner Robins placed Trey Bradley and Gabe Jacobs on the team. New Hampstead also had two selections with Antoine Youmans and Rashaun Truell.

Gators named to the Second Team were Dedric Jackson and Tezhan Bolds. Representing Warner Robins were Justin Hill and D.J. Strickland. Micah Williams was Benedictine’s representative. New Hampstead’s Katavious Woodbury and Wayne County’s Dwayne Smith round out the seven-person Second Team.
