BCHS sending 10 grapplers to state finals

Devine and Edwards capture weight classes

HAMILTON — Brantley County’s Maggie Devine and Aurora Edwards captured first-place medals Friday in the Class A wrestling Sectionals here at Harris County High School.

Devine (30-0) kept here unbeaten season intact winning the 170-pound weight class with three pins. Edwards surpassed the 30-win plateau with three victories in the 190-lb. division.

They advance to the Class A finals being staged at the Macon Centreplex Thursday, February 13 and Friday, February 14 for Class A through Class 4A.

The top four grapplers in each weight class from the Sectionals advanced to the championship round of eight.

The Lady Herons placed seventh in the field of 38 schools represented in the Sectional tournament. Greenbrier captured the event with 104 points. The Lady Wolfpack were followed in the Top 10 by Richmond Hill (71), Tift County (66), Houston County (56), Grovetown (42), Lee County (42), Brantley County (40), Camden County (38), Long County (38) and Northside ( 38).

Finishing 11-25 were Arabia Mountain (33), Cook (29), Evans (27), Jenkins (22), Glynn Academy (20), Lowndes (20), Thomas County Central (19), Bainbridge (16), Lithonia (16), New Hampstead (16), Rockdale County (16), Toombs County (16), Warner Robins (16) and Wayne County (16).

Rounding out the field were Fitzgerald (14), McIntosh County Academy (14), Newton (14), Dodge County (12), Tucker (12), Veterans (12), Vidalia (12), Jeff Davis (10), Lakeside-Evans (10), Coffee (9), ECI (6), Perry (6), Baldwin (4), Charlton County (0), Clarkston (0), Colquitt County (0), Decatur (0), Heritage (0), Peach County (0), Southwest Dekalb (0) and Ware County (0).

Devine (170; 30-0) pinned (5:17) Greenbrier’s Daniella Anguiano in the quarterfinals, Anaya Stringer of Jenkins (5:17) in the semifinals, and Richmond Hill’s Isla Stotts (1:18) to capture the championship title.

Edwards (190; 32-3) opened with a pin of Charlton County’s Deagela Dasher in seven seconds. She followed with a pin (1:21) of Long County’s Saala Tiapula in the semis. Edwards scored a 15-3 major decision of Tift County’s Debraysia Doward in the finals.
