Huey P. Davis Sr., founder and longtime host of the 4th of July barbeque and Judge Stephen Jackson Judicial Seminar in the Forks of the Hurricane, died early Thursday, Feb. 6, at his home at Beulahland Farms. He was 87.
Davis founded and hosted an annual 4th of July barbeque for over three decades at his home on the banks of the Little Hurricane Creek.
Davis’s good nature and affable manner helped him make friends easy and he took great pride in the gathering.
The picturesque setting drew politicians of all stripes and thousands of people over the years. The event drew a who’s who of public officials over the years ranging from the late former Governor Lester Maddox through former Governor Nathan Deal and including U.S. Senators Saxby Chambless and the late Johnny Isakson, U.S. Representative Jack Kingston and former State Senator Greg Goggans and former State Representatives Tommy Smith, Hinson Mosley, Mark Williams and Chad Nimmer.
The annual event ended in 2013 as Davis’ health began to fail and as candidates began to turn to digital and social media campaigning versus local voter rallies.
The venue also served as the annual location of the Judge Stephen Jackson Judicial Training Seminar for the Waycross Judicial Circuit every fall.
Davis was retired from the Department of Corrections and was the founder and leader of the impromptu Hurricane Creek Men's Club. He was very active in the Masonic community and was an avid outdoorsman and loved genealogy.
He was active at Beulah Baptist Church. Funeral services for Davis were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 9, from the Beulah Baptist Church.
