Herons split with Jeff Davis, Berrien

Brantley County split two Region 1-A DI games with the victory ending a two-game slide.

BCHS (14-6 overall, 6-4 region) suffered a second straight setback for the first time this season falling 56-48 Tuesday, January 28 to Jeff Davis (10-9, 5-4) in Hazlehurst. The victory gave the Yellow Jackets, winners of three straight, a season split after losing 61-44 in Caney Bay January 11.

Brantley County ended a mini two-game slide Friday, January 31 rallying to beat visiting Berrien (7-16, 0-11) 54-48 on Senior Night handing the Rebels an 11th straight setback. The win gave the Herons the season sweep after recording a 68-51 road win January 14 in Nashville.

BCHS closes out the regular season this week with three road games. The Herons traveled Tuesday, February 4 to Sylvester to face Worth County. They go Friday, February 7 to Alma to meet Bacon County. The season finale is Saturday, February 8 in Bearville against Pierce County.

Jeff Davis...............56 Herons ..................48 HAZLEHURST — Host Jeff Davis pulled away from a two-point halftime lead in turning back the Herons.

Brantley County, playing without injured senior point guard Tucker O’Quinn, led 11-9 after one quarter. The Yellow Jackets used a 14-10 scoring advantage in the second stanza to take a 23-21 lead to the locker room.

Jeff Davis stretched the lead by the end of the third period outscoring BCHS 15-10 to open up a 38-31 advantage. The Yellow Jackets outpointed Brantley County 18-17 over the final eight minutes.

Carson Jacobs (five rebounds) led a trio Herons in double figures finishing with 12 points. Kent Thomas contributed 11 points with Courtlon Fuller netting 10 points.

Patrick O'Quinn (teamhigh six rebounds, teamhigh six assists) bagged eight points. Holton Depratter and Hayden Stanley finished with four points and three points respectively.

Herons ..................54 Berrien..................48 CANEY BAY — Patrick O’Quinn’s double-double helped Brantley County end its losing streak as the Herons rallied to beat Berrien.

The Rebels took advantage of cold shooting by Brantley County to take a 16-9 lead after eight minutes. BCHS regrouped in the second period outscoring the visitors 17-7 to take a 26-23 lead at intermission.

Brantley County outscored the Rebels 1412 during the third quarter to stretch its lead to 40-35. A 14-13 scoring advantage in the final stanza was enough to get the win.

O’Quinn (team-high six steals) scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed a team-leading 10 rebounds. Fuller reached double figures finishing with 10 points and six rebounds. Depratter (four rebounds) followed with eight points.

Jayden Simmons (five rebounds) and Elias Esser contributed four points and three points respectively. Thomas chipped in two points and Jacobs added a free throw.
