PCHS has 13 grapplers to qualify for Sectionals
ADEL — Pierce County’s Andrew Watkins and Cooper Davis will lead a group of 13 grapplers to the Class AA Section A tournament after winning individual titles here Saturday in the five-team Area Tradtional tournament at Cook High.
Both Watkins (132 lbs.) and Davis (138) won their only match in their respective weight classes. They’ll be joined in Columbus by Cody Ammons (106), Caden Sloan (113), Gregory Sallet (120), Landon Taylor (126), Roy Carter (144), Elijah Dixon (150), Ralph Williams (157), Corran Johnson (165), Cameron Tyre (175), Greyson Sikes (190) and David Lyons (215).
The Bears finished second to host Cook in the standings. The Hornets scored 229.5 points to PCHS’s 157. The Bears were followed by Appling County (104), Sumter County (39) and Crisp County (35).
The top four finishers in each respective weight classification earned spots in each of two Sectionals. The Sectional B tournament is scheduled for Saturday, February 8 for Regions 1, 3, 5 and 8. Sectional B for Regions 2, 4, 6 and 7 is being contested at North Murray High School.
Champions Watkins (132; 45-11) recorded a 7-1 decision over Cook’s Carter Woodall in the finals.
Davis (138; 45-16) pinned (5:25) Cook’s Maliq Vickers in the championship.
Runner-up
Gregory Sallet (120; 19-30) won his semifinal match by pin (5:15) over Sumter County’s Khayden Majors. Sallet lost a 63 decision in the finals to Cook’s Tyson Daniels.
Taylor (126; 12-16) lost by technical fall (16-0) to Cook’s Timothy Walden in the championship.
Carter (144; 23-38) pinned (2:23) Sumter County’s Marcus Hardy in the semifinals and suffered a pin (1:53) loss to Appling County’s Brackson Carter in the finals.
Williams (157; 13-28) recorded a pin win over Sumter County’s Walter Carter in the semis. He lost by pin (30 seconds) to Cook’s Logan Kennedy in the championship.
Johnson (165; 14-37) notched a pin (1:26) against Sumter County’s Kevin Stone in the semifinals before falling via pin (1:44) to Cook’s Harrison Carnine.
Sikes (190; 19-35) posted a pin (1:47) win over Crisp County’s Caleb Haugabrook in the semis and lost by pin (1:06) to Cook’s Jed Rountree in the championship match.
Lyons (215; 51-6) pinned (36 seconds) Crisp County’s Kendal Hamilton in the semifinals before falling 6-3 to Cook’s J`Sun Covington in the finals.
Third-place
Caden Sloan (113; 12-47) was beaten by an 18-3 technical fall score in the semifinals. He did not have an opponent in the third-place match.
Dixon (150; 23-28) fell via pin (5:06) to Appling County’s Tylis Harrell in the semifinals before bouncing back to pin Crisp County’ Jeremiah Williamson in the third-place match.
Tyre (175; 16-42) dropped a 10-6 decision to Appling County’s Tayvon Reid in the semis ahead of pinning (3:07) Sumter County’s Jeremy Evans in the third-place match.
Fourth-place
Cody Ammons (106; 30-25) was pinned (2:26) by Cook’s Colton Bullard in the semifinals. He lost a 19-2 technical fall decision to Appling County’s Bryson Thornton in the third-place match.
