Pierce Red BB Team recently brought home the national championship from the Daisy National competition held last week in Rogers, AR.
The Pierce Red team had won the state championship earlier this year to advance to nations.
Team members include Laney Herrin, Gabriela Herrin, Lilah Hall, Greyson Christmas, Nicole Simpson, Riley Martinez and Devan Turner.
Laney Herrin, Devan Turner and Greyson Christmas also won the national champion individual award.
The team was sponsored locally by the Pierce County 4-H. Project SAFE (Shooting Awareness, Fun and Education) Team consists of BB and air rifle teams.
The Daisy Nationals brings teams of youth ages 8-15 to compete in this 5-meter, 4-position match. There are five team members and up to two alternates. Each team member shoots 10 shots each in standing, sitting, kneeling and prone positions, at a 10-ring target. Each position is worth 100 points. The bullseye on that target, worth 10 points, is about the size of a BB – and these kids hit that bullseye a lot.
But, each competitor’s Daisy Nationals score doesn’t just consist of his or her shooting totals – they must take a 100-question written test prior to the match, and that test score makes up the last possible 100 points added to their final score. There have been years when those test scores were the difference between a gold or a silver medal.
Daisy provides a 10-hour classroom curriculum that must be completed before any youth ever touches a BB gun. This curriculum provides plenty of gun safety and knowledge information to prepare a youth shooter for stepping up to the firing line.
