Maura Kate Waters of Pierce County High School recently participated in the 2023 Washington Youth Tour sponsored by Satilla Rural Electric Membership Corporation (REMC) and The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.
Waters was one of four area high school students selected to particpate in the youth tour.
Others recognized include Kaitlyn Tanner of Douglas, AnnaKate Hollingsworth of Alma and Connor Chapman of Waycross.
Waters was able to explore government on a local and national level. The group gathered in Atlanta before departing for Washington D.C. She joined 105 students from Satilla’s sister electric co-ops across Georgia for the tour.
Satilla REMC interviewed 18 candidates before selecting the four students who attended the tour. Students are nominated by their school counselors and principals for outstanding leadership qualities and abilities.
Then-Senator Lyndon Baines Johnson inspired the Youth Tour when he addressed the NRECA Annual Meeting in Chicago in 1957. The Senator and future president declared, “If one thing goes out of this meeting, it will be sending youngsters to the national capital where they can actually see what the flag stands for and represents.”
Since 1965, the Washington Youth Tour has given over 2,500 students in Georgia and more than 50,000 students nationwide the opportunity to take part in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
